Mary was first given this title by her cousin Elizabeth when during the Visitation she greets Mary with the title “the mother of my Lord” (Luke 1:43). Later on, the early church also gave Mary the title Theotokos which means "God-bearer" because her son Jesus is both God and man: one Divine Person with two natures (divine and human). This name is translated to Mother of God.
